Urea Test - Urine Spot

This test measures the amount of urea in your sample of urine.

• To assess kidney function or diagnose kidney disease
• To detect dehydration, liver disease or high protein diets

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have

• symptoms of kidney disease, such as swelling, fatigue, or changes in urination,
• a history of kidney disease or other conditions that affect the kidneys,
• high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes,
• a history of dehydration, or
• a high-protein diet.

Elevated levels may indicate kidney problems or dehydration while low levels can indicate liver disease or malnutrition.

You will be asked to collect a random sample of your urine into a clean container. You may need to provide a fresh sample at the lab. The sample will then be sent to a laboratory for testing.

• There are no dietary or activity restrictions for this test.
• Ensure you have a clean catch of urine.
• Inform your doctor about any medications and supplements you are taking, as they may affect the test results. Also, tell them if you have any specific requirements.

• Creatinine Clearance: This test measures the rate at which creatinine is cleared from the blood by the kidneys.
• BUN (blood urea nitrogen): This test measures the amount of urea in your blood and can help diagnose kidney problems or dehydration.
