Tungsten, EDTA Whole Blood Test

This test measures the levels of tungsten in your blood. 

This test is usually done to

• Identify whether you have been exposed to high levels of tungsten.
• Monitor workers who are at risk of exposure to tungsten in their jobs.
• Investigate the cause of symptoms that could be related to tungsten exposure.

Your doctor may recommend this test if

• You work in a job that involves exposure to tungsten.
• You live near an industrial area where tungsten is used.
• You have symptoms that could be related to tungsten exposure such as neurological disorders or respiratory problems.

Abnormal results may indicate recent exposure to tungsten or excessive accumulation of this metal in the body. This can manifest in symptoms like headache, dizziness, breathing difficulties, fatigue, or muscle weakness. 

During this test, a sample of your blood will be taken using a needle from a vein in your arm. You may feel a slight pinch or sting when the needle is inserted.

To prepare for this test, remember the following points:

• Inform your doctor if you are taking any medications that can interfere with the test results.
• You do not need to fast or restrict your diet before the test. 
• Drink plenty of fluids before the test to make it easier to draw blood.
