Sputum by Conventional Method

This test analyses the sputum sample to identify abnormal cells, bacteria, fungi, and other substances.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have • Persistent cough with or without sputum production. • Symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or unexplained weight loss. • Suspected respiratory infections or tuberculosis. • A family history of lung cancer or other lung diseases. • Been exposed to certain risk factors like smoking or occupational hazards.

Abnormal results might indicate • Infections such as bacterial pneumonia or tuberculosis. • Presence of abnormal cells suggesting lung cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. • Inflammatory conditions like bronchitis or asthma. Further evaluation and diagnostic tests will be needed to confirm the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment.

During this test: • You will be given a container to collect a sputum sample. • You will be asked to cough deeply and spit the sputum into the container. • The sample should be collected in the morning before eating or drinking anything. • The sample will then be sent to the laboratory for analysis.

To prepare for this test: • Rinse your mouth with water before collecting the sputum sample to avoid contamination. • Try to produce a deep cough to bring up enough sputum. • Avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth for at least one hour before collecting the sample.
