Overview
The PLA2R (Phospholipase A2 receptor) antibody quantitative test is a blood test that is used to measure the level of antibodies directed against the PLA2R protein in the blood. This test is used to help diagnose a condition called primary membranous nephropathy (PMN), which is a type of kidney disease.
In PMN, the body's immune system mistakenly produces antibodies that attack the PLA2R protein on the cells in the glomeruli of the kidney. The presence of these antibodies can cause inflammation and damage to the glomeruli, leading to protein in the urine, a decrease in kidney function, and even kidney failure if not treated.
The test is quantitative, meaning that it measures the actual level of antibodies in the blood. The result is usually given as a number (units/mL), the level of antibodies can help to monitor the disease progression and response to treatment.
