JEV RNA Detection by Real-time PCR - Serum

This test detects the presence of Japanese encephalitis virus RNA (Ribonucleic acid) in serum.

• To detect the presence of JEV in patients with acute encephalitis syndrome, especially during outbreaks in endemic areas • To distinguish Japanese encephalitis from other encephalitides caused by viruses such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika

This test is recommended for patients with suspected Japanese encephalitis, especially if they live in or have recently visited endemic areas. Pregnant women and immunocompromised patients are at higher risk.

A positive result indicates that the patient has an active JEV infection. Other possible causes of positive results include cross-reactivity with related flaviviruses or prior vaccination.

The test involves drawing a 3 ml blood sample from a vein in your arm and sending it to the laboratory for processing.

Inform your doctor if you have taken any antiviral medications or received any vaccinations against JEV or related flaviviruses. Also, let them know if you have any specific requirements.

• Serum IgM antibody testing: To detect recent JEV infection • Cerebrospinal fluid analysis: To assess brain inflammation and rule out other causes of encephalitis
