JC DNA Detection by Real-time PCR - CSF

This test detects the presence of JC polyomavirus in cerebrospinal fluid obtained through lumbar puncture.

• To detect the JC polyomavirus • To monitor the effectiveness of treatment • To evaluate patients with weakened immune systems who are at risk of developing this condition

• This test is recommended for people suspected to have progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. • It is also suggested for patients with weakened immune systems due to conditions such as HIV/AIDS, haematological malignancies, and organ transplants. • Patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapies should also take this test.

Positive results indicate the presence of the virus and thus the risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

During the test, a small sample of cerebrospinal fluid is obtained through a lumbar puncture. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for testing.

• Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially those that affect your immune system. You may have to stop taking certain medications before the test. Your doctor may also advise you to fast for a few hours before the test. • Avoid blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, for at least 48 hours before the test. • Inform your doctor if you have any allergies or medical conditions or if you have any specific requirements.
