The Sickling Test, also called a Sickle Cell Test, is a simple blood test used to identify sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait. Sickle cell disease is an inherited condition where abnormal, crescent-shaped red blood cells can block blood flow and cause pain, fatigue, and organ damage. The Sickling Test detects the presence of abnormal hemoglobin, HbS, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. This helps diagnose sickle cell disease and differentiate it from sickle cell trait, where individuals only carry one copy of the abnormal gene and typically don't experience symptoms. Early detection allows for proper monitoring and management of sickle cell disease.
