Intrinsic Factor Antibody By IFA Serum

Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to the production of large-sized RBC with functional defects leading to megaloblastic anaemia. Vitamin B12 is also required to maintain the central nervous system and its deficiency can lead to neurological deficits. 
Despite adequate dietary intake intrinsic factor deficiency or parietal cell antibody can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Establishing the cause of Vitamin B12 is essential for treatment.

What is the Intrinsic factor?

Intrinsic factor is a protein produced in the stomach that helps in the absorption of vitamin B12. It binds to the vitamin and carries it to the small intestine, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Without intrinsic factor, vitamin B12 cannot be absorbed and this can lead to a deficiency. Intrinsic factor is produced by parietal cells in the stomach. Deficiency of intrinsic factor can occur due to certain diseases or medications or as a result of aging. Treatment for intrinsic factor deficiency includes taking vitamin B12 oral supplements or injections and taking medications that help stimulate the production of intrinsic factor in the stomach.

Who should get an intrinsic factor test?

• People experiencing malabsorption or digestive issues
• People with a family history of malabsorption-related diseases
• People who have had surgery where part or all of the stomach was removed
• People with recurrent infections and anemia
• Individuals with symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, or tingling in the extremities
• People whose dietary habits put them at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency
• People over the age of 50
• People with certain medical conditions such as Crohn’s disease, Celiac disease.
