Neuropathy patients have variable sensory disturbance (loss or exaggerated sensation including with pain), weakness and autonomic involvements (sweat abnormalities, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and lightheadedness on standing).

Gangliosides are a type of glycosphingolipids that are found in the cell membrane of vertebrate neurons. Ganglioside IgM antibodies are autoantibodies that target these glycolipids, which can lead to neurological disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome multifocal neuropathy, sensory neuropathy and Miller Fisher syndrome. The test measures the levels of IgM antibodies which are the first to be produced in response to an autoimmune attack on the nervous system. The test can detect several types of ganglioside IgM antibodies, including GM1,GM2, GM3, GD1a, GD1b, GQ1b, and GT1b

Testing for the presence of these antibodies in the serum can help diagnose and monitor the progression of these neurological disorders.
