CAH (Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia) Panel

The CAH Panel measures the levels of hormones such as Androstenedione, 17 OH Progesterone, Total Testosterone, Cortisol, and Aldosterone.

• To diagnose or confirm the diagnosis of CAH • To monitor treatment effectiveness in people already diagnosed with CAH • To screen newborns for CAH • To detect hormonal imbalances or problems with the adrenal gland • To evaluate symptoms like excess hair growth, irregular periods, or infertility • To detect hormonal imbalances in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Your doctor might recommend this test if • you show symptoms of CAH such as abnormal genitalia, early development of pubic hair or acne, • you have a family history of CAH, • you have other symptoms related to abnormal hormone levels such as irregular periods or excessive hair growth, or • you are experiencing fertility problems.

Abnormal results may indicate problems with hormone production and adrenal gland function, which possibly means the presence of CAH or other hormonal disorders.

A lab technician will take a blood sample from your vein using a needle. They will store the sample in a sterile container and send it to a laboratory for testing.

• Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medications that can interfere with this test's results. • You should fast for at least eight hours before the test, although you may drink water. • Your doctor may instruct you to avoid strenuous exercise and stress before the test as they can affect hormone levels. • Inform your doctor if you have any specific requirements.

• CRH Stimulation Test: This blood test measures cortisol levels after receiving an injection of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) to diagnose adrenal gland problems. • Dexamethasone Suppression Test: This blood test measures cortisol levels after receiving a low dose of dexamethasone to diagnose Cushing's Syndrome or other adrenal gland problems.
