Aspergillus Fumigatus Test
Also known as: Allergen,Individual-Micro organism Aspergillus Fumigatus fungus
Overview
Aspergillus fumigatus is a microorganism and is one of the most prevalent airborne (conidia) types of fungus. This fungus is found in abundance throughout the environment and can flourish both indoors and outdoors. Most individuals are likely to inhale aspergillus spores regularly. Individuals with a strong immune system typically do not experience any harmful effects. In comparison, individuals with a weakened immune system may face serious infections. Although allergies to this form of mold are uncommon, some individuals may experience a severe allergic reaction from contact with aspergillus spores, especially individuals with respiratory problems or asthma.
An allergy to Aspergillus fumigatus (Fungus) triggers a reaction in an individual's immune system. The body views certain substances as toxic and produces IgE antibodies to these contaminants. These antibodies cause histamine to be released, which will cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Mold sensitization is also a major risk factor for developing upper and lower respiratory diseases such as allergic rhinitis (aka hay fever) and allergic asthma.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to Aspergillus fumigatus (Fungus)
- Identifying allergens responsible for allergic disease and/or anaphylactic episode
- To confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy
Common signs or symptoms of Aspergillus fumigatus (Fungus) allergy may include the following:
- Hives or skin rashes
- Itching/swelling
- Severe dizziness
- Trouble breathing
- Fast heartbeat
A severe, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis may occur in some cases. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs or symptoms of anaphylaxis may include:
- Rapid or increased pulse
- Swollen throat or lump, making it difficult to breathe
- Low blood pressure
- Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness
Specific IgE measures the concentration of circulating allergen specific IgE for micro-organism allergen Aspergillus fumigatus (Fungus).
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
What if Allergen,Individual-Micro organism Aspergillus Fumigatus fungus results are Present/ Absent?
Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to Aspergillus fumigatus (Fungus) that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to Aspergillus fumigatus (Fungus) allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
