AFB Rapid Culture by MGIT – Urine

This test measures the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex bacteria (MTB) as well as non-tuberculous bacteria or mycobacteria other than tuberculosis (NTM or MOTT) in urine samples.

• To diagnose infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex or non-tuberculous bacteria • To determine the effectiveness of treatment for these infections • To monitor the progress of the infection over time • To aid in identifying potential drug resistance in bacteria causing the infection

This test may be recommended if you have • Symptoms suggestive of a tuberculosis infection, such as cough, fever, weight loss, and night sweats. • A history of exposure to someone with tuberculosis. • HIV infection or other conditions that weaken your immune system and increase the risk of developing tuberculosis. • A previous diagnosis of tuberculosis and need for monitoring during and after treatment.

Abnormal results may indicate an active tuberculosis infection or other bacterial infections.

• A sample of your urine will be collected in a sterile leak-proof container. • The sample will be sent to the laboratory for processing and culture.

To prepare for this test: • Collect 15 ml of spot urine in a sterile leak-proof container. • There are no specific dietary or medication preparations required for this test. • Please reach out to your healthcare provider for any specific requirements.
