AFB-DNA (TB-PCR) Detection by Real Time PCR – CSF

This test detects DNA of Mycobacterium tuberculosis or non-tuberculous bacteria in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). If the result is MTB positive, the reflex test of Rifampicin resistance by Ultra CBNAAT is performed to determine if the MTB strain is resistant to Rifampicin, a critical drug used in TB treatment.

This test is done to diagnose infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis or non-tuberculous bacteria in the central nervous system. It helps determine the appropriate treatment and prevent complications associated with these infections.

This test is recommended for individuals who have symptoms such as severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or altered mental status, which could indicate an infection in the central nervous system. It is also useful for patients with a known or suspected diagnosis of tuberculosis meningitis or other central nervous system infections.

If the test results are abnormal, i.e., positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, it confirms the presence of an active tuberculosis infection in the central nervous system. Follow-up tests may be done to determine drug resistance patterns and guide appropriate treatment.

During the AFB-DNA (TB-PCR) test, a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid is collected using a sterile container. The sample is then sent to the laboratory for analysis. The test is painless and usually takes about 24 hours to provide results.

There are no specific preparations necessary before this test. However, it's important to provide accurate clinical history, including any recent antibiotic use or other relevant medical information, to aid in the interpretation of test results.
