Urea Clearance Test
Also known as: Urea Clearance Test, Serum & Urine 24Hrs
Overview
Urea is a waste product that results from the breakdown of proteins and is produced in the liver. This waste product is cleared from the blood by the kidneys and excreted in urine. The urea clearance test measures how well your kidneys are working. It is done by collecting a 24-hour urine sample and measuring the amount of urea in the urine. The urea clearance test is often used to diagnose kidney disease or to monitor the progression of kidney disease.

A normal urea clearance rate is 60 to 120 milliliters per minute (mL/min). A lower urea clearance rate indicates that your kidneys are not working as well as they should. Abnormal levels may indicate chronic kidney disease, acute renal failure, nephritis, urinary tract obstruction, decreased blood flow to kidneys, or other kidney-related problems.
A technician will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. They will also ask you to provide 24-hour urine samples. This means that you will need to collect all of your urine for 24 hours and store it in a special container.
