Reducing Substance (Stool)

This test measures abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism by detecting reducing substances in the stool. These substances include sugars and other compounds that should not be present in normal amounts. Abnormal levels of reducing substances can indicate various health conditions related to carbohydrate digestion and absorption.

This test is done for the following reasons:

• To diagnose abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism, such as lactose intolerance or glucose-galactose malabsorption
• To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for these conditions
• To help identify the cause of chronic diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal symptoms

This test is recommended if you have:

• Chronic diarrhoea or other gastrointestinal symptoms
• A family history of carbohydrate metabolism disorders
• Symptoms suggestive of lactose intolerance, such as bloating, gas, or diarrhoea after consuming dairy products

If this test results are abnormal, it may indicate a carbohydrate metabolism disorder. However, abnormal results do not necessarily mean you have a serious condition. It is important to discuss your test results with your doctor, who will interpret them in conjunction with your medical history and other diagnostic tests.

• Normal range: Absence or very low levels of reducing substances in the stool.
• Abnormal range: Elevated levels of reducing substances in the stool, indicating possible carbohydrate metabolism disorders such as lactose intolerance or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

• You will be given a sterile leak-proof container to collect a 5g stool sample.
• The sample should be properly labeled and submitted to the laboratory for testing.
• The laboratory will perform a chemical test on the sample to detect the presence of reducing substances.

• You should avoid any medication or dietary supplements that could interfere with the test results, unless otherwise advised by your doctor.
• It is important to follow any specific dietary instructions provided by your doctor, if applicable.

• Lactose Breath Test: This test measures how well your body digests lactose.
• Stool Culture: This test helps identify the presence of infectious agents or other pathogens in the stool.
