The test measures the elastase levels in the stool sample.
The test is done:
- To detect pancreatic insufficiency in case of steatorrhea, weight loss, food intolerances leading to gastric insufficiencies.
- To diagnose pancreatic dysfunction due to chronic pancreatitis, coeliac diseases, cholelithiasis, diabetes mellitus or in cases of cystic fibrosis.
- The test may also be done in cases of pancreatic cancer and papillary stenosis.
Patients with the following symptoms or clinical features may be advised to undergo the test:
- Patients with unexplained diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain.
- Those with unexplained weight loss, flatulence, other symptoms of food intolerance.
- Patients with chronic diabetes mellitus, cystic fibrosis leading to pancreatic insufficiency.
- Coeliac disease patients.
- Patients with pancreatic malignancies
This test requires a stool sample. The stool sample is to be collected in a sterile leak proof container as per the instructions provided. The patient is guided regarding the collection procedure.
