Microsporidium Detection by Smear Examination

This test is done primarily for:

• Diagnosis of microsporidium infections
• Monitoring infection treatment success
• Preventing severe complications in the immunocompromised

Doctors may suggest this test if you:

• Have a weakened immune system
• Show signs of persistent diarrhoea or weight loss
• Are in crowded living conditions or healthcare facilities where infections spread easily

• Abnormal values may be suggestive of presence of microsporidia.

During the test:

• A stool sample is collected in a container.
• The sample undergoes Ziehl–Neelsen staining to detect microsporidia.
• The process requires about 6 hours for results.
