CD21 IHC

CD21 detects the expression of the CD21 marker on dendritic cells in your body.

CD21 is done for multiple reasons, including:

• Help diagnose certain types of lymphoma, including follicular lymphoma
• Assess the prognosis of lymphoma
• Predict how well a patient will respond to certain types of treatment
• Distinguish follicular lymphoma from other types of lymphoma

• The CD21 IHC test may be recommended for people who have been diagnosed with an enlarged lymph node or other signs or symptoms of lymphoma.
• People with symptoms of follicular lymphoma like enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, groin, armpits, or other parts of the body, fatigue, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.
• The test may also be recommended for people who are at high risk of developing lymphoma.

Abnormal results of the CD21 IHC test may indicate that lymphoma is present. However, the test is not diagnostic and further testing may be required to confirm the diagnosis. It's important to discuss abnormal results with your doctor, who will consider your medical history and perform further tests if necessary.

During CD21, a small sample of your tissue (obtained from a previous biopsy) will be tested for the presence of CD21 markers using a process called immunohistochemistry (IHC). You won't need to undergo any specific procedures for this test, as it uses tissue samples already obtained during a biopsy or surgery.

No specific preparations are required for CD21. However, you may need to provide your original histopathology report and other relevant clinical and radiological information to assist with the interpretation of the test results. Please follow any instructions given by your doctor regarding these requirements.

• Flow cytometry: This test helps identify and analyse different types of cells in a sample, providing additional information on the immune system.
• Genetic testing: Certain genetic abnormalities can affect immune system function and may be investigated in conjunction with CD21.
• Imaging studies: CT scans or MRIs can help evaluate lymph nodes or organs affected by immune-related conditions.

Follicular lymphoma is a type of slow-growing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). NHL is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the body's immune system. The lymphatic system helps to fight infection. In follicular lymphoma, abnormal lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell, grow in lymph nodes, which are pea-sized glands found in the neck, groin, armpits, and other parts of the body. Follicular lymphoma is the most common type of NHL, accounting for about 20% of all cases. It is also one of the most treatable types of NHL. The average survival rate for people with follicular lymphoma is more than 90% at 10 years.
