Strawberries belong to the Rosaceae fruit family. Strawberries are an ideal addition to a healthy diet. Sadly, though, strawberries are one of the most frequent causes of food allergies. Allergic individuals must avoid coming in contact with and eating strawberries. Avoidance can be challenging and is not as straight-forward as it would seem. Strawberry leaves are often used in herbal teas and cosmetics; strawberry flavoring is used in medicines and skincare items; and strawberry components can be present in air fresheners, shampoos, conditioners, laundry detergent, and other household goods. Allergic individuals should carefully read the labels of such items.

An individual who is allergic to strawberries may discover that it may be necessary to avoid other fruits of this family, including cherries, apricots, apples, pears, plums, peaches, raspberries.

An allergy to strawberry triggers a reaction in an individual's immune system. The body views certain substances as toxic and produces IgE antibodies to these contaminants. These antibodies cause histamine to be released, which will cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
