Allergen, Individual-Animal Guinea Pig Epithelium Serum

This IgE allergy test uses a blood sample to determine if you are allergic to Guinea Pig Epithelia (skin cells/tissue).

Contrary to popular belief, a guinea pig allergy is not caused by their hair. It is usually caused by the proteins found in a guinea pig’s saliva or urine.

When an individual with a Guinea Pig allergy becomes exposed to these allergens, their immune system recognizes the substances as foreign. As a result, it stimulates the plasma cells to produce specific antibodies that combat the invaders. These antibodies cause a chemical known as histamine to be released, triggering an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction may occur within minutes or a few hours after initial exposure to Guinea Pig allergens and may vary from mild to severe depending on the individual.

This test may help individuals determine if they have a Guinea Pig allergy, so they may work with their healthcare provider to develop a management and treatment plan.
