HBV Precore Mutations by PCR & Sanger Sequencing - Serum

This test measures the amount of HBV DNA in serum or plasma with reflex to HBV genotype if ≥500 IU/mL is detected.

• To diagnose if you have an active HBV infection
• To monitor the effectiveness of your treatment
• To detect any drug-resistant mutations
• To assess the risk of progression to chronic liver disease
• To help identify patients who are at increased risk for liver disease or reactivation of viral replication

Your doctor may recommend this test if you

• have symptoms of acute or chronic hepatitis B,
• have a history of HBV infection,
• are currently undergoing antiviral therapy,
• have a family history of HBV infection or related complications,
• are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or
• are a healthcare worker exposed to bodily fluids or work in a high-risk industry like tattooing or piercing.

Abnormal results may indicate an active HBV infection, drug-resistant viral strains, or a persistent infection that can lead to chronic liver disease.

A healthcare professional will draw a blood sample from a vein in your arm. The sample will be sent to the laboratory for processing.

• You may need to avoid certain medications and fast for several hours.
• If you are on antiviral therapy, you may need to adjust your medication schedule.
• Inform your doctor if you have undergone any medical procedures or received other vaccinations recently. Also, tell them if you have any specific requirements.

Your doctor may recommend any of the following tests to determine the stage and severity of your liver disease:

• Liver function tests
• Liver biopsy
• Viral genotyping
• Serology testing
