What is an NIPT Test in Goa?

An NIPT Test is a safe blood screening test done during pregnancy to assess the chance of certain chromosomal conditions in your baby. The test studies small fragments of placental DNA that are present in your bloodstream.

The NIPT Test helps screen for common chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, Patau syndrome and selected sex chromosome aneuploidies. It is a screening test, not a diagnostic test. This means a high-risk result needs confirmation through diagnostic testing such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, as advised by your doctor.

The test uses a maternal blood sample collected in a special Streck tube. As per the PC-PNDT Act 2003, this test does not reveal the sex of the foetus.

What Does an NIPT Test Measure in Goa?

The NIPT Test measures chromosomal risk by analysing cell-free DNA in your blood:

  • Trisomy 21 screening: Helps assess the chance of Down syndrome.
  • Trisomy 18 screening: Helps assess the chance of Edwards syndrome.
  • Trisomy 13 screening: Helps assess the chance of Patau syndrome.
  • Sex chromosome aneuploidy screening: Helps assess the chance of conditions involving sex chromosomes, such as XO, XXX, XXY, XYY or XXYY.
  • Foetal fraction: Shows the percentage of foetal or placental DNA present in your blood sample, which is important for reliable screening.
  • Z score assessment: Helps the laboratory evaluate whether the chromosome signal falls within the expected reference interval.

Who Should Consider an NIPT Test?

You may be advised to consider an NIPT Test if your doctor wants a non-invasive screening option during pregnancy. It is especially useful for:

  • Pregnant women who are 10 weeks of pregnancy or more, as advised by their doctor.
  • Women with advanced maternal age.
  • Women with a high-risk result on dual marker or quadruple marker screening.
  • Women with ultrasound findings that need further genetic risk assessment.
  • Women with a previous pregnancy affected by a chromosomal abnormality.
  • Women who want an early, non-invasive screening test before considering invasive diagnostic procedures.
  • Women who have been advised genetic counselling before or after prenatal screening.

What Is the Purpose of an NIPT Test?

The purpose of an NIPT Test is to help your doctor assess the chance of selected chromosomal abnormalities in your baby without using an invasive procedure. It supports informed pregnancy management and helps guide whether further diagnostic testing is needed.

NIPT can reduce unnecessary invasive testing in many low-risk cases, but it does not replace diagnostic tests when results are high risk or clinically unclear.

Guide to Interpreting NIPT Test Results

What Your NIPT Test Results May Indicate

Your NIPT Test report gives a screening result. It does not confirm or rule out a condition with absolute certainty.

Report Finding

What It May Indicate

What You Should Do

Low Risk

The chance of the screened chromosomal conditions is low

Continue routine pregnancy care as advised by your doctor

High Risk

There may be an increased chance of a screened chromosomal abnormality

Speak to your doctor or genetic counsellor. Diagnostic confirmation may be advised

Foetal Fraction

Shows the percentage of foetal or placental DNA in your blood sample

Your doctor will interpret this along with the overall screening result

Z Score Within Reference Interval

Chromosomal signal falls within the expected screening range

Usually supports a low-risk interpretation for that chromosome

Z Score Outside Reference Interval

Chromosomal signal may need closer medical review

Further counselling and diagnostic testing may be recommended

Sex Chromosome Aneuploidy Result

Screens for selected sex chromosome conditions

The test does not reveal foetal sex as per the PC-PNDT Act 2003

Understanding abnormal NIPT Test results by parameter ?

Parameter

Low Risk May Mean

High Risk May Indicate

Follow-Up

Chromosome 21

Low chance of trisomy 21

Increased chance of Down syndrome

Genetic counselling and diagnostic confirmation may be advised

Chromosome 18

Low chance of trisomy 18

Increased chance of Edwards syndrome

Your doctor may advise confirmatory testing

Chromosome 13

Low chance of trisomy 13

Increased chance of Patau syndrome

Further evaluation and diagnostic testing may be needed

Sex Chromosome Aneuploidies

Low chance of the screened sex chromosome conditions

Possible XO, XXX, XXY, XYY or XXYY pattern

Genetic counselling is recommended

Foetal Fraction

Adequate foetal DNA level supports report reliability

Low foetal fraction may sometimes affect report generation or interpretation

Repeat sampling may be advised by your doctor if required

What Preparations Are Needed for an NIPT Test?

The NIPT Test needs a few important documents and simple preparation steps:

  • No fasting required: You can eat and drink normally before the test.
  • Carry mandatory documents: Bring your completed NIPT TRF and consent form with clinician stamp.
  • Keep reports ready: Carry your USG report, dual marker report and quadruple marker report, if available.
  • Carry photo ID proof: A valid photo identification document is required.
  • Confirm pregnancy details: Share your gestational age, pregnancy status and clinical indication with your doctor or the sample collection team.
  • Inform your doctor about special situations: Tell your doctor if you have a twin pregnancy, vanishing twin history, recent blood transfusion, organ transplant or any known chromosomal condition.
  • Stay normally hydrated: Drink water as you usually do before the blood sample collection.
