Glucose (120 min) Test

This test measures the level of glucose in your blood 2 hours after consuming a glucose solution. It helps determine how effectively your body processes and utilises glucose, which is essential for energy production. Monitoring glucose levels is crucial for diagnosing and managing diabetes.

This test is primarily done to diagnose and monitor diabetes. Additionally, it is used to:

• Assess gestational diabetes during pregnancy
• Determine insulin resistance in conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome
• Evaluate hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels
• Monitor the effectiveness of treatment for diabetes and related conditions

Your doctor may recommend this test if you:

• Have symptoms of diabetes such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and unexplained weight loss
• Have risk factors for diabetes, including a family history of the disease or being overweight
• Are pregnant and at risk for gestational diabetes
• Display signs of insulin resistance or polycystic ovary syndrome
• Need to assess your blood sugar control or evaluate the effectiveness of your diabetes treatment

The normal range for glucose levels after 2 hours of consuming the glucose solution is typically below 140 mg/dL. Abnormal results may indicate diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. However, abnormal results must be interpreted by your doctor, considering your medical history, symptoms, and other diagnostic tests.

Abnormal results could suggest:

• You will then consume a glucose solution within a specified time frame.
• After exactly 2 hours, another blood sample will be taken to measure your blood glucose level again.
