Fluid Lipase

This test is mainly done to assess pancreatic health and diagnose conditions such as pancreatitis. It helps in:

• Identifying pancreatic injury or inflammation
• Evaluating the effectiveness of treatment for pancreatic conditions
• Monitoring recovery from pancreatitis or other pancreatic disorders

Your doctor may recommend this test if you:

• Have symptoms of pancreatic injury or inflammation, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice
• Have a history of pancreatitis or other pancreatic disorders
• Are undergoing treatment for a pancreatic condition, to monitor its effectiveness
• Are at risk due to lifestyle factors like alcohol abuse or gallstones

The normal range for lipase levels varies, but elevated levels may indicate pancreatic injury or inflammation. However, abnormal results alone do not confirm a diagnosis. You should discuss your test results with your doctor, who will consider other factors like symptoms, medical history, and additional diagnostic tests to provide an accurate interpretation.

• A small sample of your blood will be taken, typically 3 ml for a single test or 5 ml for profiles and reflex tests.
• The blood sample will be sent to the laboratory for testing.
• The laboratory will use an enzymatic method to measure the levels of lipase in your blood sample.

• You may need to fast for a certain period before the test, usually around 8 hours.
• Your doctor may ask you to avoid certain foods, medications, or activities that can affect lipase levels.
• Follow any specific instructions provided by your doctor.

• Amylase test: Measures levels of another enzyme produced by the pancreas, which can help diagnose and monitor pancreatic conditions
• Imaging tests like ultrasound or CT scan: Used to visualise the pancreas and detect any abnormalities
• Liver function tests: Can provide information about overall liver health and help rule out other conditions causing similar symptoms
