Diabetes Profile Test Overview

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes the blood sugar levels to increase beyond the reference range. Usually the fasting and post meal levels are measured for diagnosis. Along with this, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) is also  measured to give an estimate of the average sugar levels measured over three months. In patients diagnosed as type 2 diabetes, there are other tests also performed as increased glucose levels sometimes affects other systems like the heart and kidneys. Diabetes profile, Maxi is thus a comprehensive profile that includes a group of 13 tests that is often done in diabetic patients to know the impact of the disease on the other systems.

A series of tests called the "diabetic profile" are used to diagnose and track different types of diabetes, measure their severity, and even determine how well a patient's body reacts to therapy (if you are already undergoing treatments).

Three categories can be used to classify diabetic profile exams. Each group includes different assessments for assessing and monitoring diabetes.

Blood sugar levels rise above the reference range due to the metabolic illness of diabetes. For diagnosis, typically, the fasting and post-meal levels are tested. To assess the average sugar levels observed over three months, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is also measured alongside this. There are additional tests carried out on people with type 2 diabetes since high glucose levels can occasionally have an impact on other systems, such as the heart and kidneys. Thus, the Diabetes Profile (Maxi) is a thorough profile consisting of a set of 13 tests frequently performed in diabetic patients to determine the effect of the disease on other systems.

Why is this Test Done?

Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels cannot reveal how diabetes mellitus affects other systems. Therefore, it is advised for some of these individuals to check other blood parameters also when using Diabetes Profile (Maxi).

The measurements of total cholesterol and triglyceride levels aid in our comprehension of the condition of blood vessels and the likelihood of atherosclerosis (blood vessel wall thickening). Regular urine, electrolytes, creatinine, and the microalbumin/creatinine ratio provide information about the kidneys' general health. The fasting blood sugar (FBS), PPBS (post-meal sugar), and HbA1c values all aid in determining the blood's glucose content and how well diabetes is being managed.

In the situations listed below, your doctor may advise you to get a diabetic profile -

  • If you have several diabetes-related symptoms.
  • If you have already been diagnosed with an abnormal blood glucose level during pregnancy.
  • If you are currently receiving diabetes treatment, to track how well your body is responding to the medication.
  • If you have ever experienced kidney, heart, lung, or nerve issues.
  • For determining the type of diabetes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regular testing for sugar levels does not give an idea about how the other systems are affected due to diabetes mellitus. Diabetes profile, maxi is therefore recommended for these patients to check the other blood parameters as well. This is by:

  • The total cholesterol and triglyceride levels measured help us understand the status of blood vessels and the risk of atherosclerosis (blood vessel wall thickening)
  • The routine urine, electrolytes, creatinine and  microalbumin/creatinine ratio helps us understand how well the kidneys are functioning.
  • The Fasting blood sugar(FBS), PPBS (post meal sugar) levels and the HbA1c helps to measure the glucose component in the blood and how well the diabetes is controlled.
  • To understand how well the insulin producing cells are working.

Diabetes profile test is recommended to be done periodically as per the doctor's advise to understand the disease progression.

It is a comprehensive diabetes profile test measuring 4 parameters: glucose fasting ( fasting sugar levels), HbA1c ( average blood sugar over 3 months), and total cholesterol levels in blood, and the ratio of microalbumin/creatinine levels in the urine.

CBC, FBS, PPBS, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Creatinine, Electrolytes, Urine Routine, Insulin Antibody, Microalbumin/creatinine ratio, Insulin, C-Peptide, and HbA1C are the 13 markers that make up this comprehensive test profile.

Diabetes profile test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer. Urine sample is collected to measure microalbumin/creatinine levels.

HbA1C levels of > 6.5% are classified as diabetics. In known diabetics following values can be considered as a tool for monitoring the glycaemic control.
Excellent Control - 6 to 7 %,
 Fair to Good Control - 7 to 8 %,
 Unsatisfactory Control - 8 to 10 %
and Poor Control - More than 10 %
Patients with poorly controlled diabetes are considered at risk for affecting the other systems.
High FBS  mean the diabetes needs to be controlled either with certain lifestyle modifications or by adjusting the dosage of antidiabetics.
High Cholesterol levels (≥240 mg/dL) may lead to thickening or clogging of the blood vessels impairing the blood supply. This may increase the risk of heart diseases and stroke.
High microalbumin/creatinine ratio (>30) in urine indicate problems in the functioning of the kidneys. Based on the levels it is classified as microalbuminuria (30-300) and clinical albuminuria (>300)

People with diabetes are defined as those with HbA1C levels > 6.5%. Your HbA1c values are used to gauge how well your diabetes is under control.

Elevated FBS and PPBS indicate that diabetes must be managed through dietary changes or by modifying the number of antidiabetics.

Low insulin levels could be a sign of poorly managed diabetes. In cases of long-term diabetes, it is crucial. In instances of insulin sensitivity or other illnesses, high levels may occur.

Insulin resistance is evaluated via insulin antibody testing. A positive result necessitates more testing.

Increased creatinine levels may indicate renal impairment, which can happen in long-term diabetes. Low levels could be a sign of diminished muscle mass.

A significant microalbumin/creatinine ratio (>30) in the urine indicates that the kidneys are not functioning properly.

Your doctor might suggest that you obtain a Diabetic Profile if you:

  • Have multiple symptoms connected to diabetes.
  • Have already been diagnosed as having pregnancy-related elevated blood glucose levels.
  • Are currently undergoing diabetes treatment, so it's essential to monitor how effectively the medication is working on your body.
  • Have suffered problems with your kidneys, heart, lungs, or nerves.

If you have already been diagnosed with an elevated blood glucose level, a diabetic profile test may be advised throughout the gestational time. Your doctor may recommend the diabetic profile if you are currently receiving treatment for diabetes to track how well your body is responding to the medication

Before completing your Diabetic profile, inform your physician if you are currently taking any drugs, have any sensitivities, or have underlying medical issues. Depending on your health, your doctor will provide precise recommendations on how to get ready for the Diabetic profile.

  2. Test of Kidney Function
  3. Test of Thyroid Function
  4. Vitamin Profile
