Allergen,Individual-FoodAlpha -LactalbuminMilkMilk protein
Overview
Alpha Lactalbumin is one of the primary proteins found in the Whey of cow's milk. It may result in allergy symptoms in sensitized individuals.
An allergy to a-lactalbumin will cause a person to experience symptoms such as rash, itching, hives, swelling around the face or throat, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and constipation when they consume milk or products containing milk. Many people develop a milk allergy early in life. Some people's allergies subside as they grow older, but some persist into adulthood.
An a-lactalbumin allergy test is typically ordered when a person experiences allergy symptoms within 48 hours of consuming dairy. Most people who are allergic to one milk protein are allergic to others as well.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to Alpha-Lactalbumin (Milk protein)
- Identifying allergens responsible for allergic disease and/or anaphylactic episode
- To confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy
Common signs or symptoms of Alpha-Lactalbumin (Milk protein) allergy may include the following:
- Digestive symptoms – cramps, stomach pain, bloating, nausea or vomiting
- Hives or skin rashes
- Itching/swelling (especially of the lips/face/tongue/throat)
- Severe dizziness
- Trouble breathing
- Fast heartbeat
A severe, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis may occur in some cases. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs or symptoms of anaphylaxis may include:
- Rapid or increased pulse
- Swollen throat or lump, making it difficult to breathe
- Low blood pressure
Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness
Specific IgE measures the concentration of circulating allergen specific IgE for food allergen Alpha-Lactalbumin (Milk protein).
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
Both: Negative: < 0.35 IU/ml
Both: Positive: => 0.35 IU/ml
Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to Alpha-Lactalbumin (Milk protein) that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to Alpha-Lactalbumin (Milk protein) allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
