Allergen, Individual-Dust Dermato phagoides Farinae House Dust Mite
Overview
This IgE blood allergy test will determine if you are allergic to House Dust Mites (Dermatophagoides farinae).
Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus are the most abundant house dust mites. Dust mites live in bedding, couches, and dust. They survive by feeding on organic matter, such as dead skin and hair cells.
Dust mites prefer warm, humid environments, and people living in regions with this as their climate are more susceptible to acquiring dust mites. Mites can't be seen to the naked eye, and they can't bite, but they can cause allergic reactions.
The House Dust Mite lays eggs over a 30-day period, producing about one egg a day. The major house dust mite allergens are the most potent of indoor allergens, and dust mites can cause allergic reactions in pets as well as humans.
Individuals who experience allergic reactions to D. farinae mites tend to also experience allergies to other mites in the Pyroglyphidae family.
When an individual with a house dust mites allergy becomes exposed to them, their immune system recognizes the substances as foreign. As a result, it stimulates the plasma cells to produce specific antibodies that combat the invaders. These antibodies cause a chemical known as histamine to be released, triggering an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction may occur within minutes or a few hours after initial exposure to house dust mites and may vary from mild to severe depending on the individual.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Establishing a diagnosis of an allergy to house dust mites (Dermatophagoides Farinae)
- Identifying allergens responsible for allergic disease and/or anaphylactic episode
- To confirm sensitization prior to beginning immunotherapy
Dust mite allergies mirror symptoms of hay fever or a cold, and include sneezing, runny nose, and coughing. Allergic reactions can also induce asthma, wheezing, and a skin rash.
Common signs or symptoms of a house dust mites allergy may include the following:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Itching or hives
- Rashes
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Inflammation of the skin where a cat has scratched, bitten, or licked
- Nasal Congestion
- Trouble breathing
- Light-headedness
A severe, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis may occur in some cases. An anaphylactic response requires immediate medical attention. Signs or symptoms of anaphylaxis may include:
- Rapid or increased pulse
- Swollen throat or lump, making it difficult to breathe
- Low blood pressure
Extreme dizziness or loss of consciousness
The Dermatophagoides Farinae (House Dust Mite) Allergy Blood Test measures the IgE antibody levels in the blood to detect a House Dust Mite allergy.
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to house dust mites (Dermatophagoides Farinae) that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to house dust mites (Dermatophagoides Farinae) allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
