Allergen, Individual-Animal Dog Dander Serum
Overview
Dog Hair and Dander Allergy Blood Test measures the IgE antibody levels in the blood to detect a dog allergy.
Dog allergens are easily spread through shedding hair or dander. The dog hair and dander become airborne, and once settled, they are hard to get rid of from soft surfaces, such as clothing, bedsheets, pillows, or linens, furniture (couches, chairs, or mattresses) and carpets.
When an individual with a dog allergy becomes exposed to these allergens, their immune system recognizes the substances as foreign. As a result, it stimulates the plasma cells to produce specific antibodies that combat the invaders. These antibodies cause a chemical known as histamine to be released, triggering an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction may occur within minutes or a few hours after initial exposure to dog allergens and may vary from mild to severe depending on the individual.
This test may help individuals determine if they have a dog allergy, so they may work with their healthcare provider to develop a management and treatment plan.

The Dog Hair and Dander Allergy Blood Test measures the IgE antibody levels in the blood to detect a dog allergy.
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
Negative: < 0.1 KAU/L
Positive: >= 0.1 KAU/L
Detection of IgE antibodies indicates an increased likelihood of allergy to dog dander that may be responsible for eliciting signs and symptoms. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to dog dander allergies and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
