Urobilinogen is a breakdown product of bilirubin, a yellow-orange pigment that is produced when red blood cells are broken down. Urobilinogen is normally present in small amounts in the urine. However, high levels of urobilinogen in the urine can be a sign of liver disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis, or certain types of anemia. Little or no urobilinogen may be a sign of other problems with your liver, gallbladder, or bile ducts.

This test measures the amount of urobilinogen in your urine.
To diagnose or monitor several conditions, including
- renal damage, UTI, diabetes
- liver diseases like hepatitis and cirrhosis
- haemolytic anaemia
- gallbladder diseases like cholecystitis and cholelithiasis
- biliary obstruction,
- erythropoiesis
- haemolytic jaundice
Your doctor might recommend this test if you have
- symptoms of liver disease such as jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, or nausea,
- symptoms of hemolytic anaemia such as pale skin, fatigue, and shortness of breath,
- history of gallbladder disease,
- symptoms suggesting biliary obstruction, or
- high bilirubin levels in your blood test results.
Elevated levels may indicate problems like liver disease, hemolytic anaemia, or biliary obstruction. Low levels may indicate a problem with bile flow.
You will be asked to provide a 15ml spot urine sample in a sterile container. Then, your urine sample will then be sent for testing.
