U1-SnRNP (68 KDa) Test - Serum

The U1-SnRNP (68 KDa) Serum test measures the levels of U1-SnRNP protein in your blood.

Your doctor might recommend the U1-SnRNP (68 KDa) Serum test if you have

• symptoms suggestive of rheumatic diseases, such as joint pain, fatigue, skin rashes, or muscle weakness,
• a family history or genetic risk factors for rheumatic diseases,
• been previously diagnosed with SLE or MCTD and require monitoring or assessment,
• a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test result, which indicates an autoimmune condition, or
• symptoms that overlap with multiple autoimmune diseases, requiring further investigation.

Elevated levels of U1-SnRNP may suggest the presence of rheumatic diseases like SLE or MCTD. However, abnormal results do not provide a definitive diagnosis.

Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is a rare autoimmune disorder that shares overlapping features of several other connective tissue diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), polymyositis, and rheumatoid arthritis. MCTD is characterized by a combination of clinical features from different connective tissue diseases, along with the presence of specific autoantibodies, most notably anti-U1-RNP antibodies. These antibodies target the U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein (snRNP), which is involved in RNA splicing within cells.
