Thallium Blood Test

The Thallium Blood Test measures the level of thallium present in your blood.

The Thallium Blood Test is mostly done to diagnose and monitor thallium poisoning. Other reasons include the following:

• To assess occupational exposure to thallium
• To monitor the effectiveness of thallium treatment for cancer
• As part of a multi-element blood test to detect other heavy metal toxins

Your doctor might recommend this test if you have

• Symptoms suggestive of acute or chronic thallium poisoning such as vomiting, diarrhoea, hair loss, skin rashes, neuropathy, or unexplained fatigue.
• A history or suspicion of exposure to thallium.
• A previous diagnosis or treatment with thallium for cancer.
• Symptoms suggestive of other heavy metal toxins.

Elevated levels may indicate acute or chronic thallium poisoning or exposure to other heavy metals such as lead, mercury, or arsenic.

This is a simple blood test that requires drawing a small sample of your blood from a vein in your arm. The process takes a few minutes and may cause minor discomfort. 

While there are no specific preparations needed, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to determine if there are any particular requirements you should be aware of.

Other tests that may be ordered alongside the Thallium Blood Test include:

• Heavy Metals Panel: A multi-element blood test that measures the levels of various heavy metal toxins, including thallium, lead, mercury, and arsenic.
• Urine Toxicology: A urine test that screens for the presence of drugs and toxic substances, including heavy metals.
• Imaging Tests: CT scans or MRI may be used to identify areas of thallium accumulation in the body.

Thallium poisoning occurs when an individual is exposed to high levels of thallium through contaminated water or food, accidental ingestion or inhalation of thallium compounds, or intentional poisoning. This can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, skin rashes, hair loss, nerve damage, and even death.
