Serine Quantitative Urine 24H Test

This test measures the amount of serine in your urine over 24 hours.

• To evaluate the possibility of vitamin B6 insufficiency or pyridoxal 5-phosphate coenzyme dysfunction
• To detect metabolic disorders or inborn errors of metabolism
• To evaluate the effectiveness of treatments for certain conditions
• To diagnose other conditions that affect amino acid metabolism

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have

• symptoms suggestive of vitamin B6 deficiency or other metabolic disorders such as convulsions, irritability, confusion, dermatitis, depression, etc.,
• a provisional diagnosis or suspicion of metabolic disorders or inborn errors of metabolism,
• a family history of metabolic disorders or inborn errors of metabolism, or
• received treatment for metabolic disorders.

Abnormal results may indicate vitamin B6 insufficiency, pyridoxal 5-phosphate coenzyme dysfunction, or other conditions that affect amino acid metabolism.

For this test, you will be required to collect all your urine passed over a period of 24 hours in a special container provided by the laboratory.

• Fasting may be recommended in some cases.

• Plasma amino acid analysis: This blood test measures the levels of different amino acids in the blood.
• Homocysteine Test: This blood test measures the level of homocysteine, which is an amino acid produced during protein metabolism.
