Routine Examination of Sputum

Routine examination of the sputum helps in identifying the bacteria causing pneumonia or other lower respiratory infections. By examining sputum samples under a microscope, this test detects and confirms bacterial presence, guiding appropriate treatment decisions.

This test is done to: 

• Detect and identify the cause of bacterial pneumonia
• Diagnose other lower respiratory tract infections
• Monitor the efficacy of treatment for respiratory infections

A doctor will recommend this test under the following circumstances:

• Symptoms of bacterial pneumonia-like fever, cough, and shortness of breath
• Suspected lower respiratory tract infection
• Clinical suspicion of tuberculosis or other lung infections

Abnormal results could indicate a significant bacterial infection requiring appropriate antibiotic therapy. Consult your healthcare provider to understand your results and receive proper treatment.

During this test:

• You will provide a sputum sample in a sterile container.
• The sample is examined under a microscope for bacteria.
• The results will be available the next day.

Before the test:

• Provide a detailed clinical history and specimen-type information.
• Collect 2 ml of sputum in a sterile container as per sampling guidelines.
• Ensure all necessary information is correctly mentioned on the Test Requisition Form (TRF).
• Please follow the specific instructions of your healthcare provider.

• Chest X-ray: Imaging test to visualise lung abnormalities
• Blood Cultures: Identify bacteria in the bloodstream
• Tuberculin Skin Test (TST): Determine exposure to tuberculosis
