Routine Examination (Pleural Fluid)

This test examines pleural fluid for signs of infection, inflammation, cancer cells, or other abnormalities. Identifying these substances can help determine the cause of excess fluid surrounding your lungs, guiding appropriate medical treatment.

This test is done to:

• Diagnose infections like pneumonia
• Detect cancers such as lung or breast cancer
• Identify inflammatory conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis
• Evaluate heart failure complications

Determine causes of chest pain or breathing difficultie

This test is recommended if you have:

• Breathing difficulties
• Unexplained chest pain
• Symptoms of pneumonia or lung cancer
• Rheumatologic disorders or heart failure
• History of pleural effusion or infections

• Normal range: Absence of infection, inflammation, or cancer cells
• Abnormal results may indicate infections, cancers like mesothelioma, or autoimmune diseases like lupus.
• Your doctor will interpret these findings in connection with your symptoms and history

• A small amount of pleural fluid is collected using a needle inserted between your ribs
• The procedure might cause slight discomfort but is generally well-tolerated and brief
• You may feel pressure as the fluid is withdrawn.
