This test detects the presence of abnormal cells, infectious agents, and other substances in the fluid collected from the peritoneal cavity.

This test is used to • Diagnose and monitor peritoneal malignancies, like peritonitis. • Detect infections or inflammatory conditions affecting the peritoneum. • Assess response to treatment for peritoneal cancer, ovarian cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and mesothelioma. • Determine the stage and spread of cancer in the abdomen.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have • Symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, or unexplained weight loss. • A family history of peritoneal or ovarian cancer. • Been diagnosed with cancer and there is a suspicion of spread to the peritoneum. • Undergoing treatment for peritoneal cancer or monitoring its recurrence.

If the test results are abnormal, it may indicate the presence of abnormal cells, infections, or other abnormalities in the peritoneal fluid.

During the test: • You will lie down on an examination table, and a local anaesthetic may be applied to numb the area. • A small incision will be made in your abdomen, and a catheter will be inserted to collect the fluid. • The fluid will be sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Before the test: • You may need to fast for a certain period of time prior to the procedure. • Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, as some may need to be temporarily stopped. • Follow any other instructions provided by your doctor regarding drinking fluids or taking any special precautions.
