Parvovirus B19 IgM Antibody test

This test detects the IgM antibodies in your blood.

• To diagnose fifth disease or slapped cheek syndrome in children • To determine if a pregnant woman has been exposed to the virus • To identify hydrops fetalis, a rare complication of pregnancy caused by the virus

Your doctor might recommend this test if • you show symptoms of the fifth disease, such as fever, rash, headache, etc., • you are a pregnant woman who may have been exposed to the virus, or • your newborn baby shows symptoms of hydrops fetalis.

A positive result indicates recent or current infection with the virus. High antibody levels can show that the infection was recent, and low levels can suggest previous exposure to the virus.

A healthcare professional will collect a blood sample from your vein using a needle. They will send to a laboratory for testing.

• Parvovirus B19 IgG Antibody Test: This test detects exposure to parvovirus B19 and can differentiate current from past infections. • Complete Blood Count: This blood test measures various parameters of blood cells and can help diagnose complications of parvovirus infection.

Fifth disease or slapped cheek syndrome is a mild viral illness commonly seen in children, caused by the human parvovirus B19. It usually causes a mild rash on the face and body and resolves without treatment.
