Nickel Hair Test by ICPMS

This test measures the levels of nickel in your body using your hair sample.

Your doctor may recommend taking a Nickel Hair Test by ICPMS if you have

• Suspected or confirmed exposure to nickel.
• Symptoms suggesting nickel toxicity such as skin irritation, itching, burning sensation or respiratory problems such as persistent coughing and wheezing.
• Occupational exposure to nickel.
• Allergy toward nickel.
• Worked in industries involving nickel such as stainless steel production units, welding or electroplating industries, or people living near such industrial areas.

Elevated levels of nickel in hair may indicate overexposure to nickel, which can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems or other health issues. 

The Nickel Hair Test by ICPMS is a simple and non-invasive procedure. The healthcare provider will take a small hair sample from the back of your head or other parts of your body, which will then be sent for testing.

To prepare for this test, follow the below guidelines:

• Do not apply any hair styling products (such as gels, sprays, etc.) before giving the hair sample.
• Avoid exposure to nickel-rich sources such as coins, jewellery, keys, etc., for at least 24 hours before giving the sample.
• Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking (if any).

Other tests that may be recommended alongside the Nickel Hair Test by ICPMS include the following:

• Other heavy metal toxicity tests, such as lead or mercury test
• Skin patch testing to detect nickel allergy
• Blood or urine tests to measure the levels of other toxic metals or minerals.
