Methyl Malonic Acid Qualitative Test - Urine Spot

This test detects the presence of Methyl Malonic Acid (MMA) in a spot urine sample.

• It is particularly useful in identifying a condition called methylmalonic acidemia, which is an inherited disorder characterized by the inability to break down certain amino acids and fatty acids properly.
• To assess vitamin B-12 deficiency, which can cause anaemia and neurological symptoms
• To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for genetic disorders and vitamin B-12 deficiency

Your doctor may recommend this test if you

• have symptoms of genetic disorders or vitamin B-12 deficiency,
• show signs of anaemia or neurological abnormalities,
• have a family history of genetic disorders or vitamin B-12 deficiency, or
• require monitoring for known genetic disorders or vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Abnormal results may suggest genetic disorders or vitamin B-12 deficiency, but further evaluation is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.

• You will be asked to provide a spot urine sample of approximately 15 ml.
• The urine sample will be collected in a container provided by the laboratory and sent for testing.

• Follow any dietary restrictions or guidelines provided by your doctor or the laboratory.
• Drink an adequate amount of fluids but avoid excessive fluid intake.
• Take any prescribed medications as directed unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
• Inform your doctor about any supplements or medications you are currently taking and any specific requirements that you have.
