Overview
The Coombs test, also known as the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT), is a laboratory procedure used to detect the presence of antibodies in the blood serum that can bind to red blood cells (RBCs) and cause destruction or agglutination (clumping) of these cells. The test is named after its developer, Dr. Robin Coombs. Antibodies targeting red blood cells can lead to haemolytic anaemia or haemolytic disease of the newborn or other conditions that cause the destruction of red blood cells. In these conditions, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys red blood cells, causing anaemia or complications for the fetus, posing significant health risks.
