CD5 IHC

The CD5 IHC test measures the presence of CD5 protein on the surface of cells. When T cells become cancerous, they often continue to express CD5 protein.

CD5 is done for various reasons, including:

• Diagnose T-cell lymphomas
• Differentiate T-cell lymphomas from other types of cancer
• Determine the stage of cancer
• Monitor the progress of treatment of cancer
• Detect recurrence of cancer

• CD5 testing is recommended when a healthcare provider suspects or wants to rule out specific conditions related to the immune system.
• Symptoms of T-cell lymphoma, such as fever, fatigue, and weight loss
• A family history of T-cell lymphoma
• A history of exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene or pesticides, which are known risk factors for T-cell lymphoma

Abnormal results may indicate underlying immune disorders, such as lymphomas or autoimmune diseases. However, such results need further evaluation by a healthcare professional who will consider other clinical findings and diagnostic tests before making a definitive diagnosis.

During the CD5 test:

• A small tissue sample will be taken, usually through biopsy or bone marrow aspiration.
• The sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis.
• Technicians will use a process called immunohistochemistry to detect and measure CD5 levels in the cells of the sample.

Before the CD5 test:

• You may need to provide your original histopathology report and other relevant clinical and radiological details.
• Follow any specific instructions from your doctor regarding fasting or medication.
• Ensure you have all the necessary documents and information for the test.

• Flow cytometry: It helps identify and characterise different types of cells in a sample, including T cells.
• Lymph node biopsy: This involves taking a tissue sample from an enlarged lymph node for further examination.
• Chromosomal analysis: To evaluate genetic abnormalities associated with certain lymphomas or leukaemias.
