CD31 IHC

The CD31 IHC test is a laboratory test that uses antibodies to detect the presence of CD31 protein in tissue samples.

CD31 IHC test is recommended for people who present with symptoms suggestive of an angiosarcoma or other vascular tumor. These symptoms may include:

• Presence of a lump or swelling, especially in the extremities (arms or legs)
• Aching or discomfort in the affected area
• Easy bruising or bleeding
• Difficulty breathing or coughing (if the angiosarcoma affects the lungs)
• Bloody stool (if the angiosarcoma affects the intestines)

A positive result on the CD31 IHC test means that CD31 protein was detected in the tissue sample. This is consistent with a diagnosis of angiosarcoma. However, a negative result on the CD31 IHC test does not rule out the possibility of angiosarcoma. It should be interpreted in conjunction with other clinical findings and diagnostic tests.

• A small tissue sample will be collected from the affected area using a minimally invasive procedure.
• The tissue sample will be processed and stained with specific antibodies to visualise CD31.
• The stained tissue will then be examined under a microscope to assess the presence, distribution, and characteristics of CD31.

Before undergoing the CD31 test:

• Bring any relevant medical reports, including histopathology reports, clinical details, and radiological images, if available.

• Immunohistochemistry panel: A combination of different markers used to further characterise tissue samples
• Molecular profiling: Genetic tests to identify specific gene mutations or alterations related to certain tumours or diseases.
• Radiological imaging: Techniques such as CT scans or MRIs to assess the extent of disease involvement and aid in treatment planning

Angiosarcoma is a rare and aggressive type of cancer that starts in the lining of blood vessels and lymph vessels. The lymph vessels are part of the immune system. Angiosarcoma can develop almost anywhere in the body, but it is most common in the skin, liver, and spleen.
