CD1a IHC

The CD1a IHC test measures the presence of CD1a protein on the surface of cells.

The CD1a test is done for various reasons, including:

• To diagnose dendritic cell cancers, such as Langerhans cell histiocytosis
• To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for Langerhans cell histiocytosis or other conditions involving dendritic cells
• To assist in the diagnosis of skin diseases like cutaneous T-cell lymphoma

Your doctor may recommend CD1a if you have:

• Symptoms suggestive of Langerhans cell histiocytosis, such as bone pain, skin rashes, or swollen lymph nodes
• A previous diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis or other conditions involving dendritic cells
• Skin disorders that require further evaluation

Abnormal results may indicate the presence of Langerhans cell histiocytosis or other conditions related to dendritic cells. However, abnormal results do not necessarily mean you have a serious condition. Discuss your results with your doctor for a proper evaluation.

During the CD1a test:

• A small tissue sample or biopsy may be taken from your skin or affected area.
• The sample will be sent to the laboratory for analysis.
• The laboratory will use a process called immunohistochemistry to detect and measure CD1a levels.

Before the CD1a test:

• Provide the original histopathology report and any relevant clinical and radiological details.
• Make sure to bring paraffin blocks (formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded) if available.
• Follow your doctor's instructions regarding fasting, medication, and any other specific instructions.

• Immunohistochemistry for additional markers: These tests help further characterise cell types or confirm the presence of specific diseases.
• Flow cytometry: This test analyses specific proteins on cells to assist in diagnosis and further classification.
