IGF-1 Somatomedin C Serum Test

This test measures the levels of IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1) in your blood.

• To help diagnose the cause of growth abnormalities
• To assess pituitary function
• To monitor the effectiveness of growth hormone therapy
• To diagnose certain types of pituitary tumours

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have

• delayed or stunted growth,
• symptoms suggestive of a pituitary disorder, such as excessive tiredness, unexplained weight gain or loss, changes in menstrual cycle, or sexual dysfunction,
• acromegaly symptoms, including enlarged hands and feet, facial changes, joint pain, and thickened skin, or
• a history of pituitary disorders or tumours.

Abnormal results may indicate issues such as growth hormone deficiency, pituitary tumours, liver disease, or certain genetic disorders.

A healthcare professional will collect a blood sample from your arm. After the sample is collected, it will be sent to a laboratory for analysis.

• Fast for 8 to 10 hours before the test (only plain water is allowed).
• Follow the instructions provided by your doctor and inform them if you have any specific requirements.

• Growth Hormone Stimulation Test: This test helps determine the ability of the pituitary gland to produce growth hormone.
