Fatty Liver Test Overview

The fatty liver test, or fatty liver index (FLI), is a detailed evaluation used to diagnose and assess the extent of fatty liver disease. This test uses an algorithm that considers factors like waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), triglyceride levels, and gamma-glutamyl-transferase (GGT) to estimate the probability of fatty liver. By analyzing these variables, it offers important insights into a person's liver health and helps detect potential liver issues.

Fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis, is a condition in which there is an excessive build-up of fat in the liver. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. This build-up of fat can occur in two forms, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). NAFLD is caused by a buildup of fat in the liver not caused by excessive alcohol consumption, while AFLD is caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Symptoms of fatty liver can include fatigue, abdominal pain, and weight loss, however, many people with the condition do not experience any symptoms. Left untreated, fatty liver can lead to more serious conditions such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. Treatment options for fatty liver include lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, weight loss and medications.
