Bacterial meningitis is caused by a bacterial infection and results in inflammation of the meninges. The infection is either community-acquired or nosocomial. This infection can be diagnosed by rapidly detecting the nucleic acid of the most common pathogens that cause encephalitis or meningitis.

The Bacterial Meningitis Panel, CSF is a rapid diagnostic test that detects the presence of various pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients suspected of having meningitis or encephalitis. This advanced test utilises multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to qualitatively identify the nucleic acid of these pathogens, enabling the detection of 14 common causative agents, such as Escherichia coli K1, Haemophilus influenzae, Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and several viruses and fungi.
