Alpha Iduronidase Hurler Blood Test

Alpha-iduronidase is an enzyme that breaks down certain complex sugar molecules at the cellular level. Deficiency of the enzyme leads to the accumulation of sugars in cells and in various organs, causing a group of inherited metabolic disorders, leading to serious health conditions and diseases.
 

The Alpha Iduronidase Hurler blood test measures the activity of the alpha-iduronidase enzyme in the blood. This enzyme is vital for breaking down certain glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), specifically heparan sulfate and dermatan sulfate. It's primarily used to diagnose Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I (MPS I), also known as Hurler syndrome. This condition arises from a deficiency of the alpha-iduronidase enzyme.

This test is crucial for identifying individuals with MPS I, enabling healthcare providers to determine the best treatment and management strategies. By assessing the enzyme's activity, the test identifies deficiencies that cause GAGs to build up in tissues and organs. 

This accumulation leads to the typical symptoms of Hurler syndrome, which include developmental delays, distinct facial features, skeletal abnormalities, and enlarged organs.
