The most common species of alternaria fungus is Alternaria alternata. It grows typically on various plants and trees outdoors, but in dark, moist conditions it can thrive indoors. Alternaria spores may cause allergy symptoms in individuals, particularly those with underlying respiratory conditions. In the spring and fall seasons, spore counts are usually highest.

An allergy to Alternaria alternata (fungus) triggers a reaction in an individual's immune system. The body views certain substances as toxic and produces IgE antibodies to these contaminants. These antibodies cause histamine to be released, which will cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Some people with an Alternaria alternata allergy may also experience symptoms when exposed to other types of mold. This is called cross-reactivity and occurs when your body's immune system identifies the proteins, or components, in different substances as being structurally similar or biologically related, thus triggering a response.

Mold sensitization is also a major risk factor for developing upper and lower respiratory diseases such as allergic rhinitis (aka hay fever) and allergic asthma.
