The Allergen, Individual-Food Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) test is a diagnostic tool used to identify allergies to cabbage. Cabbages are vegetables in the Brassicaceae family of plants which also includes broccoli, mustard, rapeseed and radish.

People who are allergic to cabbage will often have an allergy to other vegetables from the same family including Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, and kale.  Cabbage is used in a variety of recipes so it is important to check ingredients to ensure you are not putting your health at risk.

The allergen most commonly associated with a cabbage allergy is Bra o 3. This is a Lipid Transfer Protein resistant to heat and are found in many types of plants. Patients suffering from a more severe allergy to cooked fruit may be sensitised to this group of proteins.
