Horse Dander Allergy Blood Test measures the IgE antibody levels in the blood to detect horse allergy. Dander is flakes of skin and hair, which the horse sheds like dandruff.

In certain individuals, substances in a horse's saliva, skin cells, and dander can cause an immune system response, like cat and dog allergies. This shedding will normally trigger allergic reactions. For those who are allergic to horses, an allergic reaction can be caused by contact with the horse and contact with clothing or equipment containing the horse's dander. Also, reactions are possible by simply walking through an empty stable or areas surrounding the stable. Horse dander has been found hundreds of yards away from horse stables and can travel long distances in the air.

When an individual with a horse allergy becomes exposed to these allergens, their immune system recognizes the substances as foreign. As a result, it stimulates the plasma cells to produce specific antibodies that combat the invaders. These antibodies cause a chemical known as histamine to be released, triggering an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction may occur within minutes or a few hours after initial exposure to horse allergens and may vary from mild to severe depending on the individual.

This test may help individuals determine if they have a horse allergy, so they may work with their healthcare provider to develop a management and treatment plan.
