Helicobacter Pylori IgG Antibodies

This test measures the levels of IgG antibodies against Helicobacter pylori bacteria in your blood.

This test is done for the following reasons:

• To diagnose an active or previous Helicobacter pylori infection
• To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for Helicobacter pylori infections
• To assess the risk of developing complications related to a Helicobacter pylori infection, such as stomach ulcers or gastric cancer.

Your doctor may recommend this test if you have:

• Symptoms suggestive of a Helicobacter pylori infection, such as stomach pain, bloating, nausea, or loss of appetite
• A history of peptic ulcers or other gastrointestinal conditions
• Completed treatment for a Helicobacter pylori infection and need to check if it has been eradicated

Elevated levels of IgG antibodies indicate a current or previous Helicobacter pylori infection but do not provide information about the activity of the infection. Abnormal results should be discussed with your doctor for further evaluation and management.

During this test:

• A healthcare professional will draw a blood sample from your vein using a needle
• The blood sample will be sent to a laboratory for analysis
• The test is quick and usually causes minimal discomfort
• You can resume your normal activities after the test

To prepare for this test:

• No special preparations, such as fasting, are required.
• Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking.
• Follow your doctor's instructions regarding any dietary restrictions or medication adjustments before the test.

• Helicobacter pylori stool antigen test: This test detects the presence of Helicobacter pylori antigens in your stool, providing direct evidence of an active infection.
• Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy: This procedure allows your doctor to visualise the inside of your stomach and take tissue samples for further analysis.
